The protective devices we developed for 500 kV transmission lineshave been implemented in UHV power systems in China for manyyears.The quality of the product and the principle of the system have stoodsevere tests in practical operation.In this paper,the general characteristics of 500 kV lines in China aresystematically analysed.The requirements of protection on 500kV linesare specifically discussed,Two design schemes for 500kV protection areproposed,and the results of practical test and operation are given.Theyverified that the schemes proposed overcome the difficulties found inimported relay systems.
