Pleurotus nebrodensis has a tetrapolar mating system in which two unlinked incompatible factors (the A and B mating-type factors) controlled the mating of basidiospore-derived monokaryons. In addition to four Mendelian mating types, two new types of B factor originated during sexual reproduction through recombination within the B mating-type factor with a recombination rate of 14.1% . No recombinant A-type factor was observed.
