摘要
This essay expounds the relationship between Thematic selection and text effectiveness through the analysis of the well known speech "I Have a Dream" delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King, whereupon it makes the proposal that functional grammar should be included in College English teaching as an instrument of striking the right balance between form and meaning and of helping students develop communicative competence in the language.
