In his 'strange 'diary kept shortly before his death (2021), Gunther Riihle describes 'all his work as working towards the idea oftheatre as history, as a life report ofgenerations'. As he sees the theatre as a living organism and its history as a biography at the same time, in his writings on theatre in Germany since the end ofthe 19th century he draws on aform and a language that are analyzed and questioned in detail here, as well as their value and relevance for theatre historiography.
