Library Management: What's Love and Sex Got to Do with It?

Library managers can face issues about their own conduct and that of their staff in matters of the heart since workplace romances are common. Men and women can sexually harass in both heterosexual or LGBTQ situations. Hugging and flirting are fine if voluntary by both parties. Library managers are wise not to date subordinates. Dating among staff is difficult to keep secret and can lead to inappropriate work behavior. Marriage solves the moral issue but may create complications in scheduling. A hostile break up may cause the former couple to not want to work together and have staff take sides. The major complexity is the difference between legal behavior and cultural norms. Having multiple sexual partners, adulterous relationships, and a hyper-active dating profile are legal but may be frowned upon by staff with conservative views. Before taking any action, library managers should take care to ensure that they are acting legally.
