摘要
The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) has been a significant initiative in addressing environmental challenges and in guiding the socio-political commitments necessary to implement sustainable solutions. India has a strong foundation in scientific, technological, and people-centered approaches to biodiversity conservation. While there is a great scope for improvement in EPI rankings, the country has been actively working toward enhancing its environmental performance. India has made efforts to protect the environment and support its national and international commitments, particularly in biodiversity conservation. Despite facing challenges such as biodiversity loss, habitat fragmentation, and the impacts of climate change, the country continues to strengthen its policies and initiatives. Ongoing efforts to improve protected areas, enhance data collection, and raise public awareness are contributing to a more sustainable future. Furthermore, comprehensive management approaches are required, involving the active participation and contributions of all stakeholders. More sincere and robust efforts will lead to a cleaner environment, safeguard biodiversity, and sustain ecosystem services. This, in turn, will enable India to meet its international commitments, enhance its environmental performance, and improve the quality of life for its citizens. The present study aims to assess the various challenges faced by India to accomplish its national and international environmental commitments and propose solutions to improve the country's environmental performance with a special focus on ecosystem vitality.
