Prepaint treatment of mixed loads of aluminum and steel poses special problems. The chemical that provides a good conversion coating on steel may not do much for aluminum, and vice versa. This article describes how Optima Division of Scientific Atlanta has improved efficiency by using a single phosphate coating solution for mixed loads of steel, aluminum and zinc parts. The pretreatment works well under a water-borne paint.
