A fast, robust, and easy-to-use equilibrium solver was developed for solving for mixed boundary magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria in realistic tokamak configurations. Thus, the classic problem of computing fixed boundary MHD equilibria for tokamak plasmas was addressed and how variational methods can be used to dramatically decrease computational requirements, while maintaining generality or accuracy was demonstrated. The variational method was also semianalytic, hence permitting theorists to easily incorporate equilibrium into their computations. The variational procedure also rendered MHD equilibrium problem tractable on workstations and PCs.
