Scalar analyzers measure magnitude-only reflection and transmission characteristics of microwave components. The low cost, high speed and simple operation of scalar analyzers have been their main attraction. But their limited accuracy ( plus or minus 1 to 2 db) and dynamic range (76 db) often keep them in the role of qualitative go/no go limit line testing or intermediate screening station. When in search of an elusive low level measurement or accuracy specification, it is not uncommon to see scalar analyzer workstations accompanied by signal boosting amplifiers or accurate, high performance power meters. A new scalar network analyzer promises to change this situation significantly. Combines wide dynamic range (90 db) and high performance power meter accuracy ( plus or minus 0. 04 db linearity) in a single instrument.
