A test pile program is described in which sixteen open-ended, 24-in. -diameter steel piles were driven to penetrations of up to 77 ft. in stiff clay in Kontich, Belgium, in 1974. Two piles were statically loaded in tension and compression. The main objective of the tests was to study general pile driving behavior in stiff clay for future North Sea pile installations. Other aspects studied were influence on driveability of gravity connectors and of internal driving shoes; pile plugging; friction set-up during driving interruptions; ultimate static bearing and pullout capacities; load/settlement behavior.
