Evolution of the International Rail Traffic Between Italy and Other European Countries in the Next Ten Years.

After reviewing the sapce and time characteristics of the Italian rail traffic, an analysis is made of the statistical data of the international passenger and freight traffic in Europe in the decade 1963-1973, with estimates of the possible evolution in the decade 1974-1983. The present organizational structure of the international traffic is recalled and consideration is given to measures that should be taken to improve the service and to deal with an increase in traffic. Apart from improvements of the installations on the lines, which are making good progress, the improvement that can be made in train timings and other problems are discussed. In particular, computer-aided optimization of train time-tables is recommended.
