Effect of oxidation of SiC on the mechanical properties of 2024 Al matrix composite

The mechanical properties of as-received SiC particles and short mullite fibers reinforced 2024Al composite were compared with that of oxidized SiC particles and short mullite fibers reinforced 2024Al composite. It is found that the bending strength of the latter is obviously lower than that of the former. Microstructure analysis indicates that the strong interface reaction in latter, which results in the formation of brittle phase at the interface and the decrease of aging strengthening phase in the matrix, is responsible for the decrease of the strength.
