Studies on polishing of glass moulds after lapping with hard and soft pellets

This paper reports studies on polishing of glass moulds that are first milled and then lapped with hard and soft pellets in the optical industry. Investigations were made in the industry as well as in Gintic. These moulds are used to replicate plastic lenses. Polishing time versus surface roughness curves indicate the familiar knee, after which an increase in polishing time does not improve the surface finish. Hard pellets worked better than soft ones, yielding ductile streaks and a better surface finish.
