Mains Frequency Crucible-Type Induction Furnace in a Foundry Producing Large Steel Castings.

The conventional unit used in the electric melting of steel has been the arc furnace. Nowadays, however, mains frequency crucible-type induction furnaces are available in sizes and ratings that suggest their use in steelmaking practice. The article describes a mains frequency crucibles-type induction furnace plant comprising two 32 t furnaces and a 7. 6 MW switchgear assembly. The plant has been in operation since mid-78. It is shown that if suitable scrap is available the induction melting furnace permits steel melting cost to be substantially reduced. At the same time it helps to reduce the impact on the environment.
