This paper presents the results of a study of the analysis of short span tensile testing of dry handsheets, and furnishes the experimental evidence for the possibility of employing the short span tensile analysis for the evaluation of standard handsheet properties. Three independent parameters are derived from the short span tensile curve. The fiber strength index (FSI) is a measure of the intrinsic fiber strength, and the fiber bonding index (FBI) serves to predict the tensile breaking length, and burst. The fiber length index (FLI) is particularly related to the tear of paper. Since the experimental data can be acquired easily, the short span tensile technique provides a practical method of predicting the strength properties of mechanical pulps.
