Solubility of coal bitumens and preasphaltenes in organic solvents

Solubility of pitch of Ashland 240 grade in 34 solvents was studied. Solubility of the pitch is almost 100 % in aromatic and halogen-containing solvents and less than 10 % - in alcohols. Obtaining of a satisfactory relation between the valued of solubility of coal pitches and preasphaltenes in different solvents with physicochemical properties of the latter is possible only when multiparameter equations of free energy linearity are employed, which allow for different types of solvation processes. Ability of the solvents to non-specific solvation produces the determining effect on the solubility.
