Direct measurement of the rain attenuation in the Broadcasting Satellite for Experimental Purpose (BSE) down-link provides several interesting results. Rain-attenuation statistics are showing a considerable amount of regional variation, due chiefly to regional differences in rainfall. Measured data are summarized. These results are expected to be reflected well in a design of an operational broadcasting system to be realized in Japan in the near future. Some attempt is made to understand the statistical features of dynamic variations of rain attenuation, and interesting results are gained on fade frequency, fade duration, and fade slope.
