A description is given of some of the equipment and techniques which the author has used during barring investigations on cartonboard machines and to outline in detail two specific and quite different problems and their solution. There are three basic pieces of equipment needed for oon-machine analysis: 1) Transducers to make the measurements. 2) A spectrum analyser to process and interpret the data. 3) A multi-channel tape recorder for when several signals need to be compared and for more detailed analysis off-machine, if required. Each is examined and its usefullness assessed.
