Various reasons related to the shortage of manpower in the optics and photonics industry are discussed. One of the reason for this shortage is the downturn in the US economy. It was reported that the Americans pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in the physical sciences is steadily decreasing compared to those pursuing other degrees. Some innovative programs are reported which could the help the firms to create their own supply of workers.
