GTA weldability studies have been performed on a high Mn austenitic stainless steel (HMSS) with alloy aditions of Mo, V and Ti. Titanium improves the weld area/width (average depth/width) of poor welding heats of HMSS. A hypothesis is tested which assumes that a synergistic effect between aluminum and nitrogen is responsible for the poor weldability of some HMSS chemistries. The titanium is assumed to perturb the synergistic effect by interactions with the available nitrogen within the weld fusion zone.
