Some errors frequently encountered in pump systems for petroleum handling operations are examined. A previous article discusses problems of using elbows ahead of pumps. Getting the liquid into the pump involves two right-angle changes in direction, in orthogonal planes. The gross swirl thus produced causes cavitation damage to the pump. Some solutions to this problem are suggested.
