US Congress organized two events to discuss an approach to prevent mad cow disease. Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman stated that only 20,000 animals out of 38 million animal slaughtered each year are tested for mad cow disease. FDA banned cow blood as a milk replacer for calves and the feeding of chicken litter to cattle. It was stated that the US Congress introduced legislation requiring that all slaughtered cattle over 30 months old would be tested for mad cow disease.
