The maximum allowable span/depth ratios given by AS1480-1974 deflection provisions are not adequate for controlling deflections of reinforced concrete beams. For this reason, a modified method of calculating span/depth ratios is presented in this paper. A simple expression is developed for maximum allowable span/depth ratio for reinforced concrete beams. The derivations are based on a deflection calculation method which shows good agreement with the test data. Both the total deflection as well as the incremental deflection that may occur after the attachment of non-structural elements are limited. Numerical examples are included to illustrate the application of proposed equations to design.
