The methods of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and magnetic susceptibility were used to investigate Co-MoS//2 catalysts prepared by impregnation and joint precipitation. In these two cases the distribution of Co was found to differ significantly: In the coprecipitated catalysts all the introduced Co is found in a paramagnetic state and is located in the MoS//2 structure, whereas in the impregnated catalysts approximately half the introduced Co forms a ferromagnetic phase on the external surface. It is established that the promoting effect is due only to the presence of paramagnetic cobalt.
