摘要
An overview is given of the different analytical aspects of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and its applications in the fields of basic research and technology. Surface investigations under vacuum conditions are dealt with as well as experiments in air and electrolytes. Examples are given demonstrating that STM can be used as a nanometre size tool for manipulating matter on the mesoscopic and the (near) atomic scale.
