Bonding of castable and RIM (reaction injection molding) polyurethanes can be done in one of two ways: in-mold bonding and post vulcanization (or structural) bonding. The first is used where the design of the part and mold geometry allows the insert to be positioned within the mold cavity such as in a roller with a core. The latter is used where the complexity of the part necessitates separate molding of the individual components such as a reinforced automobile door panel. The adhesive requirements of these two types of assembly are quite different and are discussed separately in this article.
