Vacuum sewerage systems are well established in the United States. Not so in the UK - where they are few, and small. But in special circumstances they are useful and economically attractive. The biggest vacuum scheme so far in Britain has been installed for Babergh District Council. The vacuum system required one pump house. The gravity system required depths of dig of 5m, unless the sewers were located in private land or gardens. The shallow depth of dig (1-1. 5m) and the positioning of sewers in public land were considerable attractions and weighed heavily in favor of the vacuum system. Another advantage of the system was that the pump-house location was not fixed. It was possible to locate it in a quiet back land, out of view.
