It is established that the degree of oxidation of a low-alloy rimming steel has an effect on the thickness and porosity of the skin layer of the ingots. The degree of oxidation of the metal is found to be equal to 0. 0440-0. 0460%. It is established that a deviation of the degree of oxidation beyond this limit leads to a decrease in the thickness of the bubble-free layer and an increase in its porosity. The critical radius for gas nuclei forming during casting and crystallization of an ingot was estimated experimentally. It is noted that the value of this radius corresponds to the size of the cavities and pores in the cooling wall.
