Currently developed superconducting generators have armature windings on the stator, superconducting field winding and two cylindrical conducting shells on the rotor. The conventional superconducting generator with damper shell is relatively lightly damped. A new type of superconducting generator with damper winding instead of damper shell is proposed to improve transient characteristics as well as to provide damping torque by exciter control on this winding. Rotor oscillation, dynamic terminal voltage response, field current variation and temperature rise of cold electromagnetic shielding shell of the new machine are calculated and compared with those of a conventional superconducting generator with fixed exciter and with superconducting field exciter control. Best results are achieved by damper winding control.
