Based on zonal mean monthly data in the annual course for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres this article gives estimates of the typical times of inertia of climate variables in the atmosphere (troposphere and lower stratosphere): temperature and moisture content of atmosphere, cloudiness, and kinetic energy of the atmosphere. Comparison of the time displacements of the annual course of climate variables is used to analyze cause-effect relationships in the Earth's climate system.
