Askarel is a dielectric liquid consisting of polychlorinated biphenyls in a solvent (tri- and/or tetrachlorobenzene). In this article, the health hazards for man and environmental impact resulting from using polychlorinated biphenyls are compared with disadvantages of replacement products. The costs of removing these products are also taken into consideration. Recommendations for users of hazardous products are presented.
