This work reports an investigation of the effect of aqueous solutions of Sulfonol NP-1 on the wettability of powdered coal, and explains the mechanism of capillary impregnation. The wettability of coal dust was studied by measuring the rate of the capillary impregnation of coal samples of the less than 63 mu m fraction, by a procedure previously developed. The authors point to the possible use of ionogenic SAM to improve the wettability of coal particles. To select the most efficient SAM for a particular kind of coal, the authors recommend their method by means of which comparative studies of absorption rates can be carried out quickly.
