The demand for steels with better mechanical properties, higher purity and limited chemical composition calls for introducing an additional process into the traditional steelmaking technology. One such method is the introduction of a core wire into the liquid steel. This method can be used in any steelworks for the final correction of chemical composition and improving steel purity, as well as modification of non-metallic inclusions by calcium alloy addition. This article describes some metallurgical aspects of steel treatment with core wire. It also presents a modification of this technology applied abroad and compares it with the method of powder blowing. Then the article points at the possibility of core wire application in Polish metallurgy and describes the present state of work on the start of production of machines for wire making and an installation for introducing it into liquid steel.
