A study was made of the composition and properties of the sulfuric acid formed in the production of the methyl ester of methacrylic acid and certain other esters of the acrylic series. The spent acid was found to contain nonvolatile organic materials, part of which can be easily dissolved in acidic and alkaline media, in water, and in solutions of sodium sulfate, and volatile organic compounds which can be dissolved in acidic and alkaline media.
