摘要
Unix, single operating system introduced by Bell Laboratories, is considered to greatly reduce the cost and complexity of creating a distributed computing environment. Version 4. 2 of the Berkeley Software Distribution of Unix meets the challenge of integrating this network of work stations and peripherals with new and existing computers by means of enhancements like virtual-memory support, faster file access, the creation of such network services as file systems and printing, and interprocess communication supporting a multiwindow interface. The updating of Unix is reported, page-level memory mapping is described, and the new file-system implementation, data structures and algorithms are presented.
