Fundamental principles of the method and results of investigations regarding the selection of the main lines and scale of development of district heating in the USSR are considered. In particular, comparative effectiveness of its application in the western and eastern regions of the USSR is discussed, taking in account the conditions of formation of the structure of the fuel and energy complex of the Soviet Union.
