A critical review of the loading Mode I (tension) and Mode III (torsion) technique as a means of determining the role of hydrogen embrittlement in crack growth during stress-corrosion cracking of structural materials. An account is given of the mechanical and electrochemical aspects of the loading mode technique, and doubt is expressed concerning the possibility of using, in principle, Mode I and Mode III experiments for determination of the crack growth mechanism.
