An Al-1. 8Mn alloy of commercial purity was studied by transmission electron microscopy after annealing up to 24 hr at 560 to 600C. Two different decomposition products were observed after short annealing times, i. e. , a trigonal phase with a equals 28. 5 A and alpha equals 36. 0 degree and a hexagonal phase with a equals 28. 4 A and c equals 12. 4 A. It is suggested that the hexagonal decomposition product is an impurity-induced phase. As the relative amount of the trigonal phase decreased with increased annealing time, it is assumed that this phase is metastable and transforms into the hexagonal phase.
