Computer-assisted synthesis planning is becoming a very powerful tool in organic chemistry. Synthesis parameters and their relationships are not, however, easy to express in mathematical models. In this review article general principles of synthesis design and computerized planning strategies are described. The essentials only of the two best-known computer programs (LHASA and SECS) are featured. For further evaluation of the use of artificial intelligence in organic synthesis a comparison of current methods is presented in table form.
