Problem solving on the papermachine requires that first the problem be defined. This includes pinpointing the source and the extent of same. Lost time analysis using relatively broad groupings as carried out in the ″Analysis of Machine operation″ exchange provides the information as to relative levels for machines throughout the industry. Where levels for one or more categories are excessive, more detailed analysis of the category leads to determining the major contributors to the high loss level. This same information will reveal whether improvements are effected and monitor the effectiveness of the ″problem solving″ techniques employed. Once the problem is minimized the loss statistics provide a continuing check on operational effectiveness in these areas as well as all factors relating to efficient utilization of machine time. These statistics may be of great value in determining the effectiveness of preventive maintenance, clothing, new and modified papermachine equipment and so on as they relate to lost time. Extensive statistical data are tabulated.
