A discussion is presented of the various aspects governing lapping and polishing, the types of lapping machines used, the lap plate that carries the abrasive, the conditioning rings, workholders for workpieces, selection of an abrasive, selection of vehicles for abrasives, polishing cloths, compounds available for polishing, and measuring flatness to optical standards.
