The contribution of grain boundary segregation of impurities to embrittlement of reactor pressure vessel materials under irradiation and special heat treatments is discussed. Possible mechanisms of impurities and alloying elements effect on irradiation embrittlement of reactor pressure vessel steels are considered. Nickel has been found to affect significantly the tendency to irradiation embrittlement of Ni-alloyed steels. The model for irradiation-induced enrichment of grain boundaries by impurities is used in order to explain the nickel effect on irradiation embrittlement.
