The authors describe the exacting tests which determine whether older dams are safe and can be kept in service; obtain an accurate picture of dam design and material properties. The evaluation of Calaveras Dam included among other things the subsurface investigation, assessment of vibration response characteristics of the dam through performance of geophysical and ambient vibration field surveys and laborating testing of embankment and foundation materials to evaluate engineering properties under static and earthquake loading conditions.
