摘要
The concept of productivity, as applicable to the steel industry has been elucidated, together with cardinal factors contributing to it. Productivity in the past, on which limited studies have only been made, has been reviewed. In examining productivity in the present, which encompasses the time frame of the seventies and up to the Productivity Year 1982, it has been found that captial and labor productivity have shown best results for a short duration between 1975 and 1977. The efforts made by the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) during the productivity year have yielded encouraging results. Projections have been made for productivity by 2000 AD and the productivity envisaged at the new Visakhapatnam Steel Plant would be double of the best obtained in existing plants. In the global context, it has been shown that South Korean steel industry has made rapid strides in the course of a mere decade.
