Recently scanning laser microscopes have been used to characterise the semiconductor/electrolyte interface by imaging the photocurrent distribution map. Unfortunately many corrosion systems occur under conditions that exclude the possibility of the generation of a photocurrent. However, there are a number of techniques that enable a scanning laser microscope to produce images even in the absence of a photocurrent. Examples of photovoltage, photothermal and optical imaging are presented.
