ELECTROCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF MILD STEEL IN CLAY.

The corrosion rates of mild steel buried in clay containing 35% water were studied in laboratory by means of the potentiodynamic technique and curve-fitting method. Experimental period was 20 days. Under experimental conditions, the regression equation that corrosion rates of mild steel varied with time in experimental period was obtained. AC impedance measurements were performed for steel-clay (containing 35% water) corroding system. Results obtained showed that the complex plane impedance diagram contained both capacitive and inductive loops. The equivalent circuit for corroding electrodes buried in clay was proposed. In accordance with the results of AC impedance measurement, the mechanism of corrosion process for mild steel in clay was put forward.
