An aerobic, gram-negative bacterium was apparently responsible for producing a foul odor in certain machine cutting fluid emulsions. Head-space volatiles from a culture broth of the bacterium were examined by gas chromatography as well as by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the offending compound was narrowed down to either 2,5- or 2,6-dimethyl-3-methoxypyrazine. Both compounds were synthesized for comparison, and the 2,6-isomer was identified as the compound causing the odor.
