From the standpoint of attaining better plant availability and completely avoiding spurious reactor scrams, more systematic countermeasures are strongly required. Plant operability improvement reduces operator work-load, which results in reduced misoperation. To this aim, Toshiba has reevaluated the operability of conventional monitoring and control systems from the viewpoint of human engineering and has developed the Toshiba advanced control room system (PODIA) and applied it to Japanese BWR plants. This paper describes these systems and verifies their effectiveness.
