In 1974 the Commonwealth Government of Australia undertook to find a 16,000 km network of roads known as the National Highway. Funds are given to State and territory governments to undertake maintenance and improvement works. Priorities, standards and conditions are applied to the works to be undertaken. The paper discusses the planning and establishment of the network, the construction standards applied, the types of vehicles that operate on the network and the types of pavements used. Case studies explaining some of the improvement works in detail are included. The changing emphasis from new construction to maintaining the asset and the future of the network is discussed.
