This article describes a major step toward true remote control for underground machinery that has been taken at the coal mines of Beth-Elkhorn Corp. , of Kentucky, where radio signals from a battery-powered transmitter are translated by an on-board receiver into Helimer motions. The primary objective of the Beth-Elkhorn program is to insure maximum safety for the operator of the continuous miner by permitting him to observe and maneuver the machine from a distant vantage point under a firmly supported roof.
